CDI-Cast, The Economics of CDI: Understanding direct and indirect financial impact of clinical documentation practicesProgram Description You invest money in a clinical documentation program for two reasons. First, there are many regulatory, legal, and accrediting association requirements that stipulate standards for clinical documentation. And second, documentation is translated into coded data, which in turn determines reimbursement. Inaccurate documentation means inaccurate reimbursement. In this session we describe pay for performance and severity of illness measurement impact on clinical documentation practices. Learn about the relationship among case mix index (CMI), severity, and number of inpatients. Two successful stories of clinical documentation programs are described. In one program, the physician leader, who was passionate about clinical documentation, made a difference. The second case demonstrates how input from others and feedback from those in the organization who would be affected by the clinical documentation program, all contributed to a smooth implementation Session tools
